According to an article in Israel21c, the Jewish ritual of circumcision, which was a sign in the Old Testament of covenant between God and the Israelites, has recently been noted by the World Health Organization and the UN as a practical and effective prevention of HIV.
The article states that—according to the UN—"universal male circumcision in sub-Saharan Africa could help prevent about 5.7 million new infections and three million deaths over a span of 20 years."
The practice is reportedly recommended for babies in the US, since those who are circumcised, generally contract fewer infections.
Dr. Yaron Minz, who is in charge of a unit at the Israel Center for Medical Simulation (MSR), explained that the procedure will be taught first in Senegal in hopes of spreading the word to other African nations. He told Israel21c, "We will start with Senegal and hopefully hook interest from other countries in doing the same thing. I don't think the relation to, or the origin of faith or religion is the main issue here. It's AIDS. It's not only for Muslims or Christians, but a procedure to try and reduce AIDS transmission and dissemination."
While the origin of the practice may not be their focus, it is interesting how—as with so many things—something God instituted so long ago is still found to be beneficial today.
