village-3-17-2009In Bhutan, most people trust in the country's traditional religion, but many are turning to Christ after seeing His power and love.

BHUTAN (ANS) -- Villagers in Bhutan believed that famous witch doctors Puru Ganpati and his wife, Yamya, could heal any sickness. But when it came to their own devastating infirmities, they were powerless.

People came from all around to receive healing from Puru and Yamya. As those who were sick stood in awe, the couple conducted dramatic ceremonies and rituals in the name of their traditional religion. Everyone was amazed at the witch doctors' powers, and Yamya was respected just as much as her husband-a rarity in Asian culture. But last year all that changed.

Puru and Yamya fell victim to a serious illness that confined them to their bed. Completely helpless, they relied on the aid of hospitals and other witch doctors. However, their condition continued to deteriorate.

It was in this dire state that Gospel for Asia missionary Amil Romir came to their home and shared about the love of Christ. Before he left, Amil cried out to the Lord for the couple's healing. God answered that prayer, and they were immediately restored to full health.

Then Amil invited the witch doctors to a film showing of a movie about the life of Jesus. Along with many other villagers, Puru and Yamya crowded in to see the presentation. Their son-in-law, Akash Hiresh, who was the village head, also came.

After seeing Christ rise from the grip of death, Puru and Yamya walked to the front of the crowd. They told Amil they wanted to follow Christ, and prayed to give their lives to Him. Akash's heart was also deeply moved by the presentation, and he received Jesus into his life as well.

Today, Puru, Yamya and Akash are living faithfully for the Lord. Through their testimony, many other villagers are open to the Gospel.

Amil asks for prayer that many would choose to follow Christ as a result of the former witch doctors' testimonies. He also requests prayer that Puru, Yamya and Akash will continue to grow deep in their new faith.

Gospel for Asia is a mission organization involved in evangelism and church planting in Asia's unreached regions. Currently Gospel for Asia supports more than 16,000 church planters in 10 countries.
