"I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It's not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody—guy or girl—wants to be [promiscuous]."

According to several news outlets, last year's American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks took a courageous stand at MTV's Video Music Awards on Sunday night.

The evening's host, British comedian Russell Brand had made pop-rock band, the Jonas Brothers, the brunt of a series of harsh jokes because of their commitment to remain abstinent until marriage.

The jokes continued at the Jonas Brothers' expense…until Jordin Sparks took the stage, along with John Legend, to present an award. Jordin rebuked Brand for his taunting saying that there wasn't anything wrong with wearing a "promise ring" [which the Jonas Brothers wear] "because not everybody—guy or girl—wants to be [promiscuous]."

An article by Reed Dunn on WatchingAmericanIdol.com noted that Sparks herself wears a promise ring, given to her by her father. During her competition on American Idol, she had talked about her ring which bears the inscription "True Love Waits."

"I haven't been in love yet," Jordin reportedly said at the time. "I'm saving myself for marriage."
