"When I was going through the ordeal...I was very calm. It was just like Jesus Christ was right there beside me."

Missionaries attacked (Nairobi, Kenya)—Canadian based missions organization Hope for the Nations reports that John Bergen and his 66-year-old wife, Eloise—missionaries to Kenya—were brutally attacked and left for dead by five intruders in an "isolated incident." The gang also raped Eloise in the attack. A CBN report says they were "beaten mercilessly and slashed with machetes." Under the circumstances, it is a miracle they lived. (Photo: CBN News)

Said Eloise, from her hospital bed in Nairobi: "When I was going through the ordeal...I was very calm. It was just like Jesus Christ was right there beside me. It's in both of our hearts to go to the prison and tell them [the seven people, including two security guards, arrested in the case] about our forgiveness."

In an interview with CBN News, the president of Hope for the Nations, Ralph Bromley, said the couple have a "real heart" for the Kenyans and have been working with widows and children. "It wasn't a case of Kenyan nationals targeting white people to hurt them," he noted.
